Hoops 4 Health

Twenty Years of Changing Lives, Told in Two Minutes

Giving a small but extraordinary Aboriginal-led organisation a way to tell its story at the scale of its actual impact.

The Challenge

Say “Hoops 4 Health” to someone who’s never heard of it, and they’ll picture a basketball program. The reality is a great deal bigger than that. Founded and led by Timmy Duggan OAM, Hoops 4 Health is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led and run organisation that has spent over 20 years working in some of the most remote and vulnerable communities in the Southern Hemisphere, using basketball as the entry point to financial literacy programs, mentoring, healing-centred health support, and trauma-informed work addressing intergenerational harm.

The scale of what they’ve actually done is extraordinary: more than 10,000 young people reached in remote areas, over 900 sessions run inside youth detention facilities through their Hoops on the Inside program at Don Dale Youth Detention Centre and adult prisons in Alice Springs and Darwin, a life-skills program called Hoops for Wealth, and a Hoops 4 Health Academy in Darwin. Timmy came to us wanting all of it, the history, the breadth, the actual outcomes, told in a way that would land with people meeting the organisation for the first time, without shrinking it back down to “just sport.”

And for Sketch Group’s hoops-loving founder, Matthew Magain, this project was a very rare opportunity to combine the two things he loves most: basketball and illustration.

Our Approach

We ran a Discovery & Visualisation workshop with Timmy to understand not just what Hoops 4 Health does, but why: the organisation’s response to a 2016 moment of national exposure around youth detention conditions in the Northern Territory, and the culturally grounded, healing-centred philosophy that’s guided its work ever since. From there, we shaped a two-minute video and a companion illustrated poster built specifically around the Hoops for Wealth program, its life-skills pillars set on the basketball court where the work actually happens: Above the Line Thinking, Calmness Circle, Emotional Regulation, Deep Listening, Flightpath Coaching, and Strength and Endurance, all in service of First Nations success.

Our Solution

A video and poster that let the organisation’s own scale of impact do the talking, twenty years of work, ten thousand young people, hundreds of sessions inside youth detention, and multiple distinct programs, distilled into something a first-time viewer can genuinely take in in two minutes, alongside a poster that gives the Hoops for Wealth program its own clear visual identity.

The Outcome

The project resonated enough that Timmy returned the following year wanting a similar poster and video treatment for another initiative, direct evidence that the first pieces were doing their job for an organisation whose story is genuinely hard to tell well, and even harder to tell at the scale it deserves.
